Miraculously, many fairy tales are woven around the mighty Triglav. Mysteriously silent rocks, dark forests below them and sun-drenched mountains, gave birth to these fairy tales. You have a hard time finding your way to them, as the hill people are seemingly quite inaccessible, self-confident and attached to their land. The eternal struggle with the mountain and its dangers made them hard, rough and stubborn. ”This is what Mirko Kunčič, the author of Triglav fairy tales, wrote about the people and surroundings from Dovje and Mojstrana.
Triglav fairy tales are the most beautiful display of village wisdom and stories he listened to during visits to the inn near Požganec and in the village. He wrote about 70 fairy tales and published them as Triglav fairy tales, in three notebooks.
The most famous fairy tales are: How people from Dovje captured Bedanc, the Mountain man above Peričnik waterfall, The Treasure behind Grančišče, The Cursed Cats on Požganc Bridge … The stories are humorous, happy, sad, full of fairy-tale heroes, who are supposedly still present among us in the village.
Once upon a time, the masters of Dovje, in order to prove themselves, had window-sized paintings painted on the facades of houses. The motifs varied, from landscape and sacral images to flowers and animals. Eventually, this tradition was abandoned, but now it is slowly coming back. But it’s not just the windows that are drawn. Both in the language and in the stories of the Triglav Fairy Tales collection, the local academic painter Špela Oblak has so far found motifs for painting ten houses, both in Dovje and Mojstrana. Each picture represents one interesting story from Triglav fairy tales. Dovje is a village that maintains a rich tradition of diverse meetings and customs.
The paintings on the houses have the title of the fairy tale written in addition to the main theme. They are located on the facades of houses, where the local names of these are written next to them on clay tablets. The trail of fairy tales will slowly disappear, and through Kopišče (800 m), where there is an excellent view of Mojstrana and Dovje, you will head to Mlinca along the marked mountain path. The locals also call it "three bridges", where it is the junction of two streams, namely Mlinca and Žakelj. A little further on, you will leave the marked path and head towards the Orlov rovt - meadow along the Žakelj stream. You will follow a wide cart track (abandoned forest trains).
On the right side you will be greeted by the Žakelj gorge, and you will follow in the direction of the Šija 2 saddle. When you reach the saddle, continue along the ridge and you will be greeted by the famous Karavanke ridge, which leads to the third highest peak of the Karavanke - Kepa (2139 m) and winds from Lepa Plevelnica through Gubno (2034 m), Dovška Mala Kepa (2077 m) to Kepa itself. There is also a marked path leading to Kepa, and you can find a description of it in our mountain trips.
From the saddle below Borovlje, continue to stick to the ridge that leads in the southeast direction and which will take you to the top of Borovlje (1476 m). Here, you will experience a fantastic view of the Upper Sava Valley, the Julian Alps with Triglav and the three alpine valleys of Vrata, Kot and Krma. Mojstrana and Dovje will be in the palm of your hand.
The descent will follow back in the direction of Vrse and Sedučnik farm to Dovje. The path is unmarked, and from the saddle below Borovlje, you will quickly descend to the eponymous trench (Vrse 1185 m), with idyllic houses (Hartman's weekend).
From here, you will descend to the macadam road, cross it, and again follow the unmarked path near the Sedučnik stream to the spacious ditch and farm. Walk right across the yard of the farm, where you will be greeted by a cordial greeting from the owner, who will also be able to tell you about the places and stories you visited.
From the meadow, follow the road that will take you to Sedučnik's stream, descend back to Mojstrana, cross the Sava Dolinka and return to the Slovenian Alpine Museum below Grančišče.
Slovenian Alpine Museum (650 m) - Dovje (704 m) - Kopišče (800m) - Mlinca (1065 m) - Šija 2 (1370 m) - Borovlje (1476 m) - Vrse (1085 m ) - Sedučnik trench (926 m) - Dovje (704 m) - Slovenian Alpine Museum (650 m)
From the Slovenian Alpine Museum, head past the bivouac to the main road (sidewalk) and go straight down. Opposite the Pizzeria Kot, turn right towards Olympic Square. Return to the main road and head down to the crossroads. Turn left towards the old part of the village and continue straight. At the crossroads, cross the road and go down the narrow street to Čbor's house. The first drawing of Triglav fairy tales is located here. Turn right towards the end of the road and left at the next crossroads. Continue past Kruloveč's house to the second drawing of Triglav fairy tales on Požganc Bridge.
Cross the bridge and go steeply up. You will reach the main road, cross it, and climb to the village of Dovje. Before the crossroads, on the left, you will find the third drawing of Triglav fairy tales at the Church Stable. To the right of the main road, the fourth drawing is at Jencno's house. Continue past the Old School and, behind the crossroads, on the first house on the left is the fifth drawing at Šetin's Homestead. Head towards the center of the village where you will find another (eighth) drawing at Bvašč Farm.
From the square, head up a narrow street (direction signs for route no. 17) past the apiary. At the narrow crossroads, turn left and go up past Drašler's house, where the last (ninth) drawing of Triglav fairy tales is located. Follow the cart track to the macadam road and then follow the former military shelter’s bend to Kopišče (800 m) along two turns.
On the right side, take the mountain path that brings you back to the road. Follow the road to the next serpentine and, when crossing it, look for a path on the left about 70 m further. This path crosses a large clearing. Turn left onto the path, cross the clearing, and reach the road again. On the other side, the path goes through the forest with a bench nearby. The path will lead you back to the road. Go right along the road to the intersection of macadam roads. At the crossroads, turn right towards Mlinca (direction signs for Kepa). The road then descends to Mlinca, where the stream of the same name converges with the Žakelj Stream from the left.
Follow the direction signs for Kepa to the northwest, but after 100 m, stop folowing the signs and continue northwest along the Žakelj Stream on the cart track. Cross the bridge, rise slightly, and reach a plateau where the Žakelj Stream flows from the right. Stick to the left, following the cart track that slowly rises towards Orlov Rovt - meadow. At the only serpentine, the path branches left (stop following the cart track going right). Turn left (following stone men markers) and reach a small saddle after 50 m. The path descends slightly, and you will reach the scree. After crossing the scree, climb 30 m up and left to a well-visible path in the pine forest. Follow this steep path, which passes through the pine forest in the lower part and through the forest under the Šija 2 Saddle (1370 m) in the upper part. This path will bring you to the Šija 2 Saddle.
From the saddle, turn left in a southeasterly direction. The path continues along an indistinct ridge, rising very slowly, and eventually descends to the saddle below Borovlje. From here, follow the ridge to a characteristic larch with a large cavity in the trunk. Continue below the ridge on the west side and climb to the top of Borovlje (1476 m).
Follow the same path back to the saddle below Borovlje. There, turn left downhill in a southwest direction on a well-trodden path leading to the weekend houses in Vrse. Walk down the left bank of the torrent. In Vrse, a view of Triglav opens up. Proceed past the weekend houses to the right onto a dirt road that descends to the main dirt road. When you reach the main macadam road, cross it twice through the forest and reach the first serpentine. Go a little to the right, and at the serpentine, follow the path through the forest in a westerly direction down to Sedučnik Trench.
Follow this path, which was once a cart track and is wide and well-visible but unmarked. Cross the Sedučnik Stream. After crossing, the path continues south. Before reaching Sedučnik Trench, the path joins a forest track. Turn left and descend behind Sedučnik's farm. Just before the farm, turn right, passing the woodshed, and then left to the yard (be cautious as this is private property; be respectful to the owners).
From the farm, follow the asphalt road down to the bridge under which the Sedučnik Stream flows. Immediately after the bridge, turn right into the woods to shorten the walk along the road. When you reach the road again, turn right into the woods to cross it a second time. Continue along the cart track back towards the stream or the white little house. Before the house, turn left and head down across the fields along the Sedučnik Stream (which will be on your left) to the main road leading to Dovje. Cross the road and continue down the creek to the next intersection with the main road. You will see the blue Sava Bridge, information board about Triglav fairy tales and a bench.
Cross the Sava River and, after the bridge, diagonally to the right towards a football field. Cross it along the upper western side, join the asphalt road, ascend the slope, and at the first crossroads, turn right onto a narrow street. At the end, turn left, then soon right, and head below Grančišče towards the museum. At the crossroads of the main road, turn left and go straight to the museum, which will be on the right. Enjoy your visit to the museum.
