Mojstrana and other villages under Triglav are also an ideal starting point for various winter activities, including ski touring, even in winter.
On one side, it is surrounded by the Triglav National Park with the Julian Alps, and on the other side, the 120 km long mountain range of the Karawanks. If anywhere, it is right here in the Karawanks, towering over Mojstrana and Dovje, that the most beautiful views of our Highest mountain (Triglav) and the other peaks of the Julian Alps unfold. The Dovška Rožca plateau at 1650 m will not disappoint you with its views, while the summit of Dovška Baba at 1891 m will open up even further horizons, including those to the north.
The tour begins just above the village of Dovje, at the intersection leading to Mlinca and Ravne, where there is a small parking lot that fits 2 - 3 cars. If it is full, the main parking lot is at the church of Saint Michael in Dovje.
The tour has a steep character and continuously ascends towards our goal, Dovška Baba. We will start along a gravel road (which leads to the Dovška Rožca plateau) through Dovške Ravne, where the views will constantly be drawn to the Julian Alps. We will also see the famous Blaščeva rock, where three rocks resemble the famous Dolomite's Three Peaks. After a while, we will reach the Dovška Rožca plateau. There is a shepherd's hut on the plateau, but it is closed during the winter. Below the information board, we will experience a magnificent view of the Krma Valley, Kot, Vrata, and the remaining part of the Julian Alps. Our main goal will be above us. From the hut, we will follow the ridge towards the summit of Dovška Baba.
Dovška Baba is an excellent viewpoint, where the view extends far towards the northern neighbors, a wonderful destination for hikers and an excellent choice for ski touring enthusiasts in the winter.
The descent will first take us down to the Dovška Rožca plateau, then back towards the ridge and slightly diagonally towards the hut. From the hut, we will continue down the road we came up.
We will not search for shortcuts by crossing the road, as it could easily lead to unnecessary complications.
Parking at the Ravne - Mlinca junction (760 m) - Dovška Rožca Plateau (1650 m) - Dovška Baba (1891 m) - Parking at the Ravne - Mlinca junction (760 m)
We will start the route at the parking lot described above and follow the road to the right towards the Mlinca power plant, with a stream on the left. We will slowly ascend past the Blažčeva rock, reaching a sharp hairpin curve with a fantastic viewpoint above Mojstrana – a bench is located here. Continuing forward, we reach the next junction, where we go straight for the direction of Visoke – Jesenice. Here, we turn left towards Dovška Baba, following the signposts. We continue ascending.
At an altitude of 1200 m, we reach a barrier. We follow the gravel road all the way. At Starka (1350 m), where a summer path branches off to the left, we still follow the gravel road. We turn right onto the gravel road towards the large hairpin curve, where we ascend steeply to the left. Slowly, the forest opens, and the view reveals the hut on the Dovška Rožca Plateau at 1650 m. Continue straight, and we reach the hut. From here, the path follows the left side, staying close to the ridge (but not too close to the ridge – dangerous!). At the top, there is a beautiful view of the surroundings.
We ski back in the same direction we ascended, as skiing in this section is the safest, and we return to the hut. Afterward, we follow the road that leads from the hut back to the parking lot. We do not seek shortcuts, as we could quickly go off track or find ourselves in steeper and more dangerous terrain.
