Across Lake Kreda (technological learning path) to Kosmač saddle

Mojstrana, once an industrial hub with a renowned 19th-century cement factory, now offers a rich blend of history and adventure. Visitors can explore the artificial Lake Kreda, ascend to the picturesque Kosmač saddle, and descend through the enchanting Mlačca Gorge, ending their journey at the Slovenian Alpine Museum.

The village of Mojstrana is not only known for its skilled craftsmen of the past and as an excellent starting point for ascents in the Triglav mountain range, but it was also a significant industrial village in the early 19th century, with a cement factory in operation. The factory was located in an area known today as "Factory." Part of the trail follows the Technological Learning Path, dedicated to preserving the memory of the cement plant, which operated from 1893 to 1932. The high-quality cement produced here was used in the construction of the Suez Canal, the Singapore Fort, and many other sites around the world.

Lake Kreda (Chalk Lake) is an artificial lake created during the cement plant’s operation, as the area held large reserves of chalk, which was the best raw material for cement production. In the 1980s, special ski jumps were also organized on a ski jump built above the lake. At that time, the lake served as the villagers' annual bathing spot. Today, the lake is a kind of swamp reserve for frogs and other inhabitants of the swamp world.

After Lake Kreda, the trail ascends to Požar's Meadow and continues up to the idyllic Kosmač Saddle (847 m), where a coal mill once operated, offering a wonderful view of the Kot and Krma valleys. The descent partly follows an asphalt road, connecting with a trail built in 1977 in the lower part. The trail was initiated by the longtime elementary school principal, Mr. Emil Brezavšček, and was in operation for a good decade.

Next, the descent continues through the Mlačca Gorge. Here, the tireless Pavel Skumavc and the Ice Kingdom team organize Living Christmas Cribs in Ice and artificial icy waterfalls every year, providing a training ground for future ice climbers.

The excursion concludes at the Slovenian Alpine Museum, a climbing and mountaineering museum that has been the pride of our municipality since 2010. With its permanent and temporary exhibitions and events, it continues to impress the Slovenian alpine and mountaineering audience.

Slovenian Alpine Museum (650 m) - Lake Kreda (730 m) - Požar meadow (880 m) - Kosmač saddle (847 m)  - Mlačca gorge (700 m) - Slovenian Alpine Museum (650 m).

At Slovenian Alpine Museum (SAM), cross the footbridge over the Triglavska Bistrica River. On the other side, turn right towards the west, heading into the Vrata Valley. Soon, you will reach a second green bridge. Continue forward on the Technological Learning Path in the direction of Lake Kreda (Path No. 15), following the river Triglavska Bistrica.

At the crossroads, turn left and go uphill until you reach Lake Kreda. From here, follow the right side of the lake uphill to the crossroads with the forest road (used only by tractors). From this point, turn left and continue uphill, heading south, passing Polda Meadow. After the meadow, turn left and follow the noticeable ridge southwest to a flat area just before Požar Meadow. Continue southwest along the system of forest roads, crossing Požar Meadow, until you reach Kosmač Saddle. Here, an asphalt road from Mojstrana intersects.

From Kosmač Saddle, turn left onto the asphalt road heading towards Mojstrana. After passing a water tank, follow the road for approximately 300 meters. Then, turn left onto the forest road, cross the stream, and immediately turn right, following the stream along the left side where you will find the old trim path. This path leads you to Mlačca Gorge.

At the end of the gorge, pass the tennis courts and ballroom to reach the asphalt road. Follow this road back to SAM.
