Black cats at Požganc bridge, Mountain Man at Peričnik and much more are part of the stories from the book Triglav fairytales, collected according to old folk tales by poet, writer and playwright Mirko Kunčič (1899 - 1984). In an outdoor show - Trails of the Triglav Fairytales, performed by Marcel and Leona Gomboc in 2003 in the villages of Mojstrana and Dovje, these stories have been brought to life for young and adult audience. Metka Kern Trček and France Voga, with illustrations by Špela Oblak, adapted these fairytales into the book "Triglav's tales" so that  children could get acquainted with the fairy-tale world beneath Triglav. During the trip, you will see paintings on the old farmhouses in Mojstrana and Dovje.

The Slovenian Alpine Museum in Mojstrana, where the excursion begins, has been in operation since 2010. In addition to its extensive museum collection, it is also known for housing the first rescue helicopter in Slovenia, which has provided rescue assistance to mountain rescuers throughout the country. The year of the first flight and assistance is 1968.

From the museum, you can walk past the bivouac to the Viharnik garden, which, with its countless lights and cribs, entertains visitors, especially during Christmas time. A part of the garden is dedicated to Slovenian Olympians. In September 2016, the municipality of Kranjska Gora also showed respect for these athletes by constructing a square dedicated to them. Twenty-one athletes from our area have participated in the Winter Olympics, making Mojstrana the place with the most Olympians in Slovenia.

Follow through the old village center of Mojstrana, where at the wall of Čbor House (so-called home name), you will see the first drawing of the Triglav fairy tales: Black Cats on the Požganc Bridge. A little further along the main road, at Pr 'Krulovc's, you will find another drawing: The Mountain Man at Peričnik.

Black cats await you at Požganc Bridge, named after the pub of the same name, which operated in the time of Jakob Aljaž. Mister Požganc was Aljaž's foreman during the construction of the huts in the Triglav mountains. Today, the bridge is declared a cultural heritage monument and is decorated with artificial lights.

On the footpath, you will climb towards the village of Dovje, cross the main road and soon find yourself at the village church of St. Michael. Built in the early 14th century, the church showcases a mixed architectural style due to numerous reconstructions throughout history. Gothic traces are visible, but it was rebuilt in a neo-Renaissance style and is covered with shingles. Pastor Jakob Aljaž served this church for 38 years, and his dedication left a significant mark on Slovenian history. His monument can be found along the main road. As you walk through the village of Dovje, you will encounter more illustrations of Triglav fairy tales, including:

  • Farov's barn: Legend of Dovje church
  • Jenc house: Evening at the meadow
  • Setina house: The tooth of St. Hlem under Žolne
  • Brence house: Mlinca of hermit Sablca
  • Bvaščeva house: The secret of Blaščeva cave
  • Drašler house: Golden lake at Močilnik above Dovje

From the last house, you will head above Dovje village, where the former border guard house stood, and enjoy a wonderful view of Dovje, Mojstrana, and the Kingdom of Triglav and the Julian Alps.

Dovje is a village with a healthy climate, which is sunbathing on the south slopes of Karawanks at an altitude of 704 m. The clustered village has about 700 inhabitants. The village has a thousand-year tradition, and the name Dovje is supposed to be named after long fields, which have been shaped by diligent locals in the terraces below the village for centuries. The Dovje estate was first mentioned in 1015 and then in 1033 when Bishop Konrad II and Count Alberik donated the estate to the Bishops of Freising.

The village has preserved its peasant tradition and many alpine features, such as semicircular farmhouse front door and tufted roofs. In the centre of the village stands the restored Pr 'Katr blacksmith's. Above the village, you will walk to the Sedučnik stream and descend back to Mojstrana, cross the Sava Dolinka and return to the Slovenian Alpine Museum beneath Grančišče.

Slovenian Alpine Museum (650 m) - Dovje (704 m) - flat area at old border guard house (800 m) - Sedučnik stream (765 m)  - Sava bridge (650 m) - Slovenian Alpine Museum (650 m)

Starting at the Slovenian Alpine Museum, head past the bivouac to continue to the main road. Follow the sidewalk straight down in direction of Dovje. On the opposite side of Pizzeria Kot, turn right and walk to Olympian square. Return to the main road and at the crossroads, turn left into the old part of the village Mojstrana. Straight forward and after a very narrow street, you’ll arrive at Čbor house - a white house at the crossroads on your left - where you’ll see the first drawing from the Triglav Fairytale book.

Next, turn right to return to the main road and then turn left. You’ll pass the second drawing on Krulovč House. Continue straight until you reach the Black Cat Bridge. After crossing the bridge, head uphill and after 20 meters, cross the road and take the path through the grass on your left. Continue uphill until you reach the main road. Cross the road and walk straight through the avenue of chestnut trees in the direction of the church. Feel free to explore the church, and then turn right to head back towards the village.

Continue until you reach the mail village square, where you’ll the renovated blacksmith shop Pr'Katr. Along the way, you’ll pass four more drawings on the houses. After the square, continue forward uphill - you'll pass a small apiary and a narrow street (path no. 17). At a very small and narrow crossroads, turn left uphill and continue slightly to the right until you reach Drašler House, where you’ll see the last drawing.

From here, follow the small gravel path, which eventually leads to a larger gravel road. After two turns on this road, you’ll arrive at the former border area.

At the end of the flat area, continue west on a small path that traverses a grassy slope, staying on the same level all the time. Pass through a small forest to the other side of the pasture and follow the path until you reach a fence. Descend to the gravel road and turn right at the crossroads. At the end of the village, follow the macadam road and by the stream turn right down towards the main road. Follow the path alongside the stream, cross the main village road, and continue on the path until you reach the main road.

Cross the road and descend until you reach the third main road, cross it and continue forward to blue bridge over the Sava river. Continue past the football field and road, then turn right until you reach the asphalt road. Head uphill towards Veliki breg and take the first street right on the right. At the end, turn left and follow the road under Grančišče Hill, passing the starting point of the Via Ferrata Mojstrana. At the crossroads, turn left to return to the Slovenian Alpine Museum.
