"The path is the story - the story is the path" is the slogan of the Slovenian Alpine Museum. The museum seamlessly connects the past with the present, featuring a rich collection of objects, diverse historical narratives, a variety of photographic and archival materials, and a large professional library. These resources provide deep insight into the significance of mountain activities in Slovenia.
Founded in 2010, the museum was established under the leadership of Mr. Miro Eržen, who was then president of the Alpine Club Dovje - Mojstrana and continued as the museum's director until his retirement. The museum's wide range of exhibits, including permanent and occasional exhibitions, numerous events, and notable attractions, make it appealing to visitors of all ages. Highlights include impressive virtual content, a Slovenian police helicopter used in early mountain rescue attempts, a virtual zip line from Triglav, and the original Bivouac II, which features an escape room.
The museum also offers bicycle rentals and via ferrata climbing equipment for nearby routes. The parking lot is the starting point for the Triglavska Bistrica Trail, and the museum’s reception houses the info point for the Tourist Association Dovje-Mojstrana, which includes a small shop with maps, mountaineering guides, and souvenirs. A visit to this museum is highly recommended.
To reach the museum, follow the newly arranged walking path along the old railway route, completed in 2018. The old railway, part of the Ljubljana-Tarvisio connection built in 1870, was 102 km long and played a crucial role in the area's tourist development. Mojstrana had a train station, with the last train departing on March 31, 1966, marking Marshal Tito’s final visit, who came to see the ski jumps in Planica.
Today, a walking trail extends from Topolino to the Blue Sava Bridge, with the cycle track continuing from there. Park at Topolino, the current info center at the Sava Bridge. The route leads across both the cycling and Sava Bridges, then follows a macadam road along the Sava Dolinka River.
On Požganc bridge you will see 7 sworn black cats, which are part of the stories of the collection of Triglav fairy tales, collected by the poet, writer and playwright Mirko Kunčič (1899 - 1984), according to old folk tales. The outdoor play "Walk Along the Triglav Fairy Tales" was performed in Mojstrana and Dovje in 2003 by Marcel and Leona Gomboc and it was a significant event for both young and adult audiences. Metka Kern Trček and France Voga, with illustrations by Špela Oblak, adapted these fairy tales into the book Triglav Stories, allowing children to explore the fairy-tale world beneath Triglav. Across the Sava Bridge (a picturesque spot with a bench for resting), the path leads across Proda (a football field) and below Grančišče (the Mojstrana via ferrata) to the Slovenian Alpine Museum.
From the museum, continue past Bivouac II to the Viharnik Garden. This garden, adorned with countless lights and cribs, especially delights visitors during Christmas time. A section of the garden is dedicated to Slovenian Olympians. In September 2016, the municipality of Kranjska Gora honored the contribution of local athletes with a special market. We are proud to have the place with the most Olympians in Slovenia, with 21 athletes from our region competing in the Winter Olympics.
Proceed across the River Bistrica Bridge to the Šmerc Guesthouse, which is renowned for its friendliness and excellent service. Among its notable guests was Julius Kugy, as well as visitors from Austria, Germany, and Italy. Special charm of the house comes from the beautiful frescoes on the wall.
To your right, you will see the ski slope of Mojstrana. Straight ahead, you will find the small church of St. Klemen. According to legend, this is where St. Cyril and St. Methodius rested on their journey to Rome with the relics of St. Klemen. Finally, head back to Topolino, the starting point of your journey.
