Triglav’s kingdom from the direction of Mojstrana is surrounded by three icy valleys that may lead us into its fairy-tale realm: Krma, Kot, and Vrata. Of these, Vrata is the longest and most picturesque, accessible from Mojstrana.
At the end of Vrata Valley, you’ll find the imposing Triglav North Wall, a 1,300-meter-high and 3,500-meter-wide expanse featuring over 140 climbing routes. The longest route, known as the German Route, extends 1,300 meters to the summit of Triglav, the most known way takes place over the middle Triglav’s pillar named after climber Jože Čop - Čop’s pillar.
Aljažev dom v Vratih, a hut built by Jakob Aljaž in the early 20th century, serves as an excellent starting point for tours in the Julian Alps. You can stop for a snack at the Peričnik Hut, located beside the eponymous waterfall, which is your main destination.
Peričnik waterfall is the second biggest attraction of the area, after Triglav north wall. It is positioned in the middle of valley on the east side in the area of Langarjeva Komna. Stream itself is short and it connects to Triglavska Bistrica river on two parts. Here originate two waterfalls, the Upper and the Lower Peričnik watterfal. Upper one is 16 m high, the lower one is 52 m, both of them are falling steeply over cliffs, distinctive for the valley. In summer, the waterfall provides a refreshing stop, while in winter, you can observe climbers scaling the icy vertical.
The route returns in a circular path, initially following the left side of the Triglavska Bistrica River (looking up the valley, this is the right side) along a renovated hunting path (unmarked). From the waterfall, head back to Mojstrana on the right side of the river, arriving at the Slovenian Alpine Museum.

From the Slovenian Alpine Museum, follow the trail sign for Triglavska Bistrica. Cross the river over the bridge and continue on the right side towards Vrata, heading to the green bridge. Cross the bridge, then shortly after, turn left onto the macadam road next to the river. At the first crossroad, turn right onto the main road, then take a left and follow the road in the direction of Vrata.
Soon, you’ll notice a path in the forest on your right. Follow this path, passing Langarjev rovt on your left (downhill), and continue rising. After approximately 1 km, the forest path will end, and you’ll reach a narrow trail. Follow the trail, keeping all turns to the left as marked. Do not take any right turns up the hill. After about 500 meters, you’ll join another path and continue along it for an additional 400 meters.
At the marked junction, turn left onto a narrow path. Proceed with caution, as the path can be tricky. About 1 km before reaching the waterfall, you’ll encounter a three-way fork. Follow the left path, and after approximately 500 meters, you will see the waterfall. The path leads directly underneath it. At the end of the road, the path turns around a corner, leading you to the upper waterfall. From there, cross to the other side and continue by path to the lower waterfall. Be careful, as the wooden fence is down. Climb the high stone stairs, take a few more steps, and turn left to reach the lower waterfall.
Return to the road and head left towards the Peričnik Hut (Koča pri Peričniku), which is open during the summer hiking season and on weekends, but closed in spring and winter. From the hut, follow the road for approximately 500 meters and then take the right path marked as the Triglavska Bistrica Trail. Cross the bridge to the power station Pri Rosu, where you’ll find an information table about the educational trail.
Continue straight along the right side of the river to the green bridge you crossed earlier. From there, head straight to Kofler Sport, then turn left downhill. Cross the river and walk to the parking area in front of the Slovenian Alpine Museum.
